The SSHRC-CURA has funded the VOICE project with a Participatory Action Research design. In as far as possible, it is important to keep the main objectives and practices of this type of research in the minds of the researchers, particularly as the method widely departs from many forms of qualitative and quantitative academic research. Researchers who have been trained in conventional methods can find PAR messy and challenging but also rewarding.
To successfully conduct a PAR project all participant must understand the method.
The VOICE-IT project proposal outlines the reasons for selecting PAR.
Conventional academic research has not adequately addressed critical issues in the substantive area of education in FNMI communities.
The abundant research that has been done is bound up in journals or academic language that renders it unavailable for fostering necessary change
Community members must be actively included in research about their community
FNMI communities have been exploited in the past and have developed protocols to ensure such exploitation is not perpetuated.
